3D printing movable artificial cervical spine technology leads the world
Low-key, elegant, and modest are the first impressions left by Professor He Xijing. “If cervical spine lesions compress the spinal cord, such as severe cervical spondylosis, the intervertebral disc must be removed before the operation is performed. The compression of the spinal cord can be relieved. The current practice in the world is to add a titanium cage to the removed part, requiring the doctor to be on the operating table. However, the collapse rate of the hand-cut titanium cage is as high as 79.7%-93.3%, and it is easy to cause internal fixation loosening and displacement, leading to complications such as recurrence of clinical symptoms. To this end, He Xijing led the team to start the research on titanium cage technology. “In the beginning, I experimented with goats, and every time I adjusted, I told the factory engineer what was inappropriate. The engineer would draw the drawing and send it to the workshop for processing. This process usually takes at least three months, and the cycle is indeed too long. During the development process, we saw that 3D technology can print houses and heart stents, so we thought of using 3D technology to directly print titanium cages, so we put them into practice. This idea has brought us to the forefront of the world.”
He Xijing led the team combined with metal 3D printing technology to develop a personalized dome titanium cage artificial cervical spine over several years, and innovatively proposed the implantation of a movable artificial vertebral body-intervertebral disc complex after subtotal vertebral body resection. , The concept of reconstructing the function of the vertebral body motor unit, developed a movable artificial cervical prosthesis and an artificial atlanto-tooth joint. So far, the world’s first movable artificial atlantoaxial joint replacement operation has been successfully carried out. The technology now has invention patents in China, the European Union and the United States.

Professor He Xijing went to Switzerland and Australia to study the clinical surgical treatment of scoliosis and spinal diseases, and the theory and technology of artificial joint replacement. He has accumulated rich clinical experience in the treatment of a large number of intractable and high-risk diseases in orthopedics, and has cured many clinical cases. Intractable diseases.
Professor He Xijing cooperated with the University of Hong Kong and the University of Rochester in the experimental research and clinical application of allogeneic olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation in the treatment of spinal cord injury. It has received good clinical effects and improved the quality of life of paraplegic patients. At present, the use of olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation to treat spinal cord injury is the longest follow-up time in the world, which has been more than 10 years. This subject won the first prize of Shaanxi Science and Technology Award in 2013. Professor He said: “In the future, 3D technology will be used to print cells to make biofilms, which will be applied to the injured spinal cord, so that cells can be transplanted without injection.”
In 2003, He Xijing took the lead in the treatment of scoliosis with minimally invasive thoracoscopic internal fixation, which is at the leading level in China and filled the gap in the Northwest. The treatment of intervertebral disc herniation under foraminal endoscope has the characteristics of less trauma, less bleeding and quick recovery. He cooperated with Professor Hoogland, the inventor of the German TESSYS technology, to establish a training base for intervertebral endoscope.
